Integrating content areas

This was an excellent example of integrating content areas: students are so much more excited about writing a persuasive letter when they have done their own scientific research and have developed their own stance on an issue. Using science to make a political or social judgment stimulates so many areas of their brain, and makes their writing that much more persuasive. This was a much more positive experience in my classroom than using workbooks or form letters. By having students share their scientific knowledge with adults and write a letter to an actual person, this lesson plan increased their motivation, attention, and self esteem. Thank you!

Science and Math

This is an excellent lesson plan because it integrates Science and Math while teaching Language. In this lesson, students are given a step by step format to write their persuasive letter. This facilitates their writing and are able to focus on the content instead of the structure. I like this lesson because students learn new vocabulary and have the opportunity to practice it in their writing.

Content Integration

Using science as an engaging backbone for successful content integration is a great idea. ALL students love science, and when it is utilized in a way so as to provide many opportunities to review important concepts in other content areas, then student success is fully realized. I have taught this lesson before, and I noticed a level of focus in my students that was not present when doing everyday activities. They wrote well because they HAD to to get their important point across. Everything they learned during this unit was synthesized in a way which let them see that the world needs people like them, and they they indeed can make a difference.

Integrating content areas

This is a great lesson plan because Science and Math are integrated and the students are also learning new vocabulary (language). Since the students are given the opportunity to be involved and do their own research they are more excited about writing a persuasive letter where they apply the knowledge they have obtained through their research. Rather than having students work of a text book this type of lesson not only makes it more exciting to learn but also it is more stimulating.

What are Eco Peanuts made of

The lessons provided in this unit are exceptional. It is very obvious that this teacher has a good understanding of applying the standards and giving teachers and students excellent step-by-step directions. Because the vocabulary is broken down, these lessons and directions make these lesson very “user- friendly” for second language learners and for students in general. The activities given to the student, including research on the internet and writing persuasive letters to name a few are very appropriate and exciting. Lessons like these are very timely and fit in the "Green" environmental concern of students. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Integration

This lesson provides more than adequate descriptive information. The directions are clear and the goals are clearly stated. The rationale for the lesson is relevant to content standards. The plan’s content is appropriate for children at this grade level. The lesson as a whole seems quite engaging for students as it utilizes hands-on activities, technology, and higher level thinking. The assignments within the lesson are clear, manageable, and related to the lesson objectives. The closure provided in this lesson plan reinforces learning, conveys a sense of completeness, and synthesizes the content of the lesson.

Great lesson

I loved learning and reading about this simple yet effective lesson that I can use with my students. Involving local politicians and researching their interests is a skill that will be useful for them as they become contributing voting members of our society. Allowing students to learn about a topic and be able to defend their position in a persuasive essay using science is not only creative but an awesome way to tie in multiple subject areas into one lesson. Science, if taught correctly, is usually one of the more favorite subjects for kids. This lesson helps to reinforce that idea that by using fun and creative science activities, students can accomplish difficult and meaningful tasks.
