Description: Chemical reactions are more common than you might suspect; an apple slice turning brown, toast burning, and a bicycle rusting are all examples of chemical reactions. In chemical reactions, reactants are changed into products by changing the way in which atoms are arranged. Some signs that a chemical reaction has occurred are: a color change, the formation of gas, a temperature change, the formation of a solid or a change in smell. In the first part of this lesson students will combine three substances (reactants) and observe many of the changes associated with a chemical reaction. In the second part of this lesson students will design a simple experiment to determine which reactant is responsible for one of the changes they observed, the increase in temperature.
